Prayer Letter September 2014

SEPTEMBER 2014

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  (Jeremiah 29:11)

“Amen!” shouted a shrill, small voice at the end of the prayer. I glanced up to see who belonged to this tiny voice and saw little Xipi sitting in the middle of the teenagers at the Christian Training Center. When I asked Xipi how old he was, he pounded his fist on his bare chest in Tarzan-like fashion and responded, “I — four years old.” I was immediately intrigued by this little fellow who seemed to have a maturity far beyond his age. As Xipi left the room for a moment, the Director of the Christian Training Center told me his story: “Xipi was abandoned by his parents. They left him here in the river town when they went back to the village. His uncle, Chico, found him crying in an empty house and brought him to live with us here at the Center. Xipi is the first one up in the morning and goes around waking everyone else up, especially when it is time for our Bible Study. He has a tiny Bible that someone gave him and he carries it around with him.” I began to think of the plans that God must have for this young one . . . plans, perhaps, to be a great evangelist among his people.  After the Storying session, I began gathering my things together, when I heard Xipi call out, “Mommy — mommy!” I quickly turned, wanting to see this mother who had abandoned her son — only to find Xipi looking at me. As our eyes met, he gave me a wink . . . and I suddenly felt “adopted” by this little child! “Sing to God, sing praise to his name . . . a father to the fatherless . . . God sets the lonely in families” (Psalm 68: 4-6).

PLEASE PRAY:

  1. Please pray for the Directors of the Christian Training Center as they raise little Xipi. Pray that God will give them wisdom and patience to educate him according to Biblical principles. Pray that God will use Xipi to take the Gospel to his own people.

  1.  Thank you for praying for Kiko, who was bitten by a snake some months ago. Kiko continues to struggle with the restrictions of the witch doctors. When the medical doctor is allowed to treat the bite, the witch doctors undo the bandage and put their leaves and herbs inside the wound. For this reason, the bite has still not been able to heal properly. Please continue to pray that God would heal Kiko in such a way that the witch doctors and everyone will know that it had to be God’s power at work and nothing that they themselves have done.

  1.  Thank the Lord that we have been able to hold Bible Storying Training sessions with several unreached and unevangelized people groups since March of this year. Pray for me as I will be going this next week to hold more Bible Storying Training sessions. Pray that God will give me wisdom to deal with the restrictions of the authorities, courage to continue teaching God’s Word and creativity to communicate the Gospel to those who have never heard.

  1. Please continue to pray for the Christian Training Center. This Center houses students from three unreached and unevangelized people groups who are studying in the river town. It is at the Center that they begin to study the Word of God for the first time. However, it is in the river town that they are also exposed to all of the worldly evils: drugs, alcohol and prostitution. Pray that the students would allow God to guide them as they make choices and decisions every day. Pray that God would give them a passion to study His Word and a desire to take the Biblical teachings seriously.

  1.  Pray for us as we teach the Biblical Narratives to the students at the Christian Training Center weekly. Pray that God would open their minds to understand His Word. Due to the volatile situation with the restrictions here, we have begun to teach a shortened version of Biblical Narratives — which begins with the Spirit World/Creation and ends with the New Testament Church/Our Task Today — but which only takes from 10-12 minutes to tell. We have challenged the students to learn this version of Biblical Narratives in the national language by the end of October. They will, then, tell the Stories in their own languages. Pray that God will help them understand the national language well enough to tell these Narratives. Pray that through the Biblical Narratives, the students will come to know God and His power to save.

  1.  Thank God for what He is doing among the N people. This people group has been plagued by manifestations of the evil one in their villages and much spiritual oppression among those who live in the river town. Now, after working with them for four years, I am beginning to see joy and peace on their faces as they are coming to know God as the “Only True God Who Is All-Powerful and Who Loves Them.” They are beginning to understand that God is much more powerful than the evil one — so, they do not need to live in fear. In our last Storying session two weeks ago, they just wanted to sing and praise God — so that is what we did!

  1.  Please pray for my teammates Rita de Cássia Cordeiro and Davi Oh Sung Kwon who are in treatment due to medical problems. Pray that God will bring healing to both of them, so they can continue to serve Him here with our team.

  1.  Thank you for praying for my family. Recently, my sister, Kendra, has had to have a couple of procedures done to help stretch the location of the colon surgery that she had done last year. She is doing well. God continues to give His grace and strength to my mother. It is a joy to talk with her on the telephone.

Thank you for praying,
Kathy

Prayer Letter October/November

Dec 2nd, 2011 | By | Category: Updates From Kathy (Our Local Church Missionary)

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2011

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God . . .” (2 Cor. 10: 3-5a)

I knew that things had not been going as I had hoped, but I didn’t perceive the extent to which Satan was behind the problems until the end of last week. We have held monthly Bible Storying Training Sessions since July of this year. Each time, we had some problems with the participants—either forgetting to come to the sessions or not coming to the sessions due to other commitments, etc. However, this past week of Storying Training was much more difficult. The week began with a new participant who seemed excited about the training. But, due to the fact that she is expecting a baby—she became very ill in the first session and couldn’t participate the rest of the week. I was disappointed, but considered this normal. Then, on two different days, I waited for several other participants to come to the training sessions—only to find out that they were participating in a march to get rid of the authorities in town. By this time, I was becoming discouraged. I marked a session with D (from our last story) for the final day of the training week. But, Satan was at work the evening before, turning the night’s events into what could be compared to “the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah.” Around midnight, some of D’s relatives threw a party in which there was a lot of drinking and carousing. After several fellows had gotten drunk, they decided to have their way with D’s brother-in-law who was there. He ran from them, but they caught him and . . . killed him. Everyone in town was shocked at this act of perversion and brutality. The next day, we visited D’s family to offer support and pray with them. Please PRAY, PRAY, PRAY that God would tear down the strongholds that Satan has among these people. Pray that God would strengthen us so that we can faithfully proclaim His Word.

PLEASE PRAY:

1. Please continue to pray for D’s family. D and her daughter have been very involved in our Bible Storying Training classes, but have not made firm commitments to the Lord, yet. Pray for us as we minister to the family after this tragedy.

2. Thank you for praying for the last week of Bible Storying Training Classes that were held. Please pray that God would bind Satan and his activities from these training sessions. Pray that God will bring people to us who should participate in future training sessions. Pray, also, that the participants will have a serious commitment to the training and faithfully attend the sessions. Pray that God will give our team members strength, wisdom and patience to lead the training. Pray for us as we schedule several different sessions of the training per day in order to work around classes and other responsibilities of the participants. Pray for the next Bible Storying Training Classes that will be held December 11-17.

3. Pray for a river trip that our team is planning to take in January. Pray that we will receive permission to make the trip, that we will be able to teach basic hygiene measures to the people in the village and that we will have an opportunity to share the Gospel.

4. Pray for a Training Center that is being constructed to reach young men of six people groups in this region. These fellows come down the river to study in the public schools. The Center will provide housing, a place to study and a place for them to learn about God and His Word. Pray for us as we are already working with some of these fellows. Pray that they will have a desire to know God and obey His Word. Pray that God will use us as instruments of His grace in the lives of these young men.

5. Pray for another Half-Way house that our team is helping to build. This house will be used by another group of our friends as a place to stay when they come down the river to get supplies. Thank the Lord for the first Half-Way house that was built and the way that God has used the house to open doors for the Gospel.

6. Please pray for our team members. Pray that God will give us wisdom, strength, health and safety as we work together in what He has called us to do.

Thank you for praying,

Kathy
